About the Project

The East Cowes Community Partnership's Environmental Group, under chair Denise Hill, has won a substantial sum of money from the Local Heritage Initiative (LHi) for the Old Kingston Cemetery Project.

The purposes approved by the LHi are:

  • To investigate the heritage of Old Kingston Cemetery.
  • To promote the heritage of East Cowes & the Cemetery.
  • To engage the local and wider community in researching their local heritage.
  • To produce a guide leaflet, interpretation panels and website.
  • To update the LHi website with current information.
  • To produce a survey.
  • To host an exhibition.

The project outputs will be:

  • No less than 3 exhibitions - poetry, photography, etc.
  • A website to show the research undertaken throughout the Project.
  • No less than 3 interpretation panels.
  • No less than 8 directional signs.
  • Oral History transcribed and given to the local history archives.
  • No less than 3 sureys (biodiversity).
  • No less than 10 bat and bird boxes (5 each)
  • No less than 3 viewing points.

We will be seeking volunteers to help in researching and recording details of those buried in the cemetery.

There are also plenty of other activities for folk to take part in, such as joining work parties to tidy overgrown area, enhance the air raid memorial area, create a garden area near the entrance, carry out wildlife surveys, record inscriptions, draw and paint flora etc.
